What is Medical Tourism

Medical Tourism is the proces of travelling to other countries for medical care. People chose to travel for a variety of reasons and those reasons include but are not limited to: rising health care costs, waiting lists, convenience, accessibility of international travel, improved technology and standards of care in many countries, Joint Commission International accreditation, employer health care savings, bonuses paid by employers or health plans, and the ability to receive treatment in a bucket list location with recuperation in a desired location at significant saving.

What is International Accreditation and how does it relate to U.S. Hospital Standards?

Trusted International Accreditation is the hallmark of any good medical facility and is one of the biggest drivers of growth in the medical tourism industry. In the United States, hospital accreditation is overseen by the Joint Commission, located in Chicago, IL. In 1999, the Joint Commission launched its’ international affiliate agency, the Joint International Commission (JCI). Currently more than 900 hospitals and clinical services around the world have received JCI accreditation and this number increases by about 25% a year. To be acredited, an international hospital must meet a set of very stringent and rigorous standards set by the Joint Commission.
